Ok, I’ll be upfront with you, this dessert is a little sinful. No, it is a lot sinful, but oh so gooood! Apple cider donuts are made fresh daily in our farm market’s bakery. They are a huge hit with our customers. If you never had an apple cider donut, I am so sorry. Apple cider donuts are these cake batter donuts that are made with Jersey Fresh apple cider, deep-fried and rolled in a cinnamon-sugar mixture while they are hot.
While a lot of farm markets only make theirs during the fall, we make our Apple Cider Donuts every day. Oh the temptation…try working at Russo’s. They are divine, any time of year – especially when they are hot off the machine. But I love them during the fall season the most.
Here is a tasty alternative to just eating a plain donut. Some people are probably cringing that I am actually suggesting using them in an alternative way. But hey, think outside the box. Turn an apple cider donut into an ice cream sundae – an Apple Cider Doughnut Sundae to be exact. Vanilla ice cream, layered with apple cider donut pieces and then topped with a sweet brown sugar apple topping is just as good as it sounds. I made mine in a mason jar but if you don’t have one, a bowl will work perfectly too. This dessert screams fall with Jersey Fresh apples and fresh apple cider donuts but is perfect to eat all year round. Enjoy!
- 1 Apple diced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider
- 1 Apple Cider Donut cut into pieces
- Vanilla ice cream
- Whipped Cream
- Cinnamon for garnish
- Melt butter in skillet.
- Add diced apple, brown sugar, and cinnamon and simmer for 3 minutes. Apples should be slightly crunchy.
- Remove from heat and set aside
- In Mason Jar (or bowl) add one scoop of vanilla ice cream to bottom.
- Top with donut pieces.
- Add another scoop of ice cream.
- Drizzle top with apple topping.
- Top of with whipped cream
