Last year, I purchased a few really cool chalkboard spice jars at Anthropologie, one of my favorite stores. I was excited when I found them because I love anything with a chalkboard these days. Plus, they were on sale, and I love a good sale! They now provide perfect storage for a few of my different salts.
I love the chalkboard look. Change the contents that is stored in the jar, just erase and change the name on the front. So versatile. There is one problem with this whole situation, however….I should have bought more. Now, they are discontinued and I am out of luck, or am I. While I may no longer be able to purchase the same ones from Anthropoligie, I had an idea of creating my own similar Chalkboard Spice Jars.
I always seem to have a lot of empty jars in my pantry. While I do recycle, I try to always keep a few on hand just in case I need one to store something. Now, I am putting them to good use. With spray paint in hand, I set out to create my own Chalkboard Spice Jars.
Empty glass jars with lids
White spray paint
Colored spray paint
Chalkboard stickers OR Chalkboard paint and a square shaped stencil
Here is how to create these convenient little containers.
First, wash each jar thoroughly. I put mine in the dishwasher. Once they are dry, I used some white spray paint and thoroughly coated all sides. You can certainly use any color paint you wish. I like white and was trying to match the jars I had already purchased. I applied 2 coats of paint to the outside and let dry completely in between coats.
I left the lids on so no paint gets on the inside. It is important to leave the lids on while spray painting because you want to make sure the inside of the jars are not painted so they remain food safe.
I then spray painted a few coats to the outside only area of the lids. Apply 2 coats. Again, only paint the outside of the lids so the underside of the lids are paint free and food safe.
Now, it’s time to add the chalkboard – my favorite part. I found these really cool chalkboard stickers at my local craft store. I simply peeled and placed them on my jars. You can also use a stencil and chalkboard paint to paint the chalkboard area on if you wish. Using the stickers saved me a lot of time.
I love the fact that you can paint the lids any color you wish. Making the jars bright and colorful or muted and soft.
I love how these jars turned out! They were so easy to create. Making them was easy on my budget too. My only expense was the chalkboard stickers. Plus, it is a great way to recycle old glass jars. With all the spices in my cabinet, I seriously could open up a spice store. Now, I have a way to creatively display them. Don’t you just love easy craft projects!
