Oh, there is no place like gnome for the holidays. I think this cute Buffalo Check Christmas Gnome will agree. If you didn’t figure things out by the title of this post, I hanging with my gnomies today. I am combining two really popular trends – buffalo check and gnomes, into a perfect DIY Christmas craft that you can make too.

Gnomes. I find that people either love them or hate them. I get a kick out of these jovial little men. Gnomes originated in Germany in the 1800s. They are known to be symbols of good luck and protection. Which is why we often see them in our neighbors’ gardens. They make great indoor decorations too, especially at Christmas. This gnome craft is a Dollar Store craft too. I was able to find most of the materials at my local dollar store.

Fill white kid’s quarter sock full of rice by scooping it in and smooshing down to get the rice as full as possible. Fill up to the sock band. Use the heal side for the face. Using your fingers, form a sizeable nose out of the heal. Take 2 tiny clear rubber bands and use 1 to secure the nose, wrap twice if you can. Use the other to secure the top of the sock, wrap twice.

To secure these even more and in case a rubber band breaks, wrap twine tightly around the nose and top of the head as knot tightly.

Trim the top of the white sock down.

Prepare his beard by cutting a piece of felt in the shape of the beard you want. Hold the felt up to the nose and trace a small circular cutout for the nose.

This can be trimmed and formed later. To create a fluffy beard, separate the strands of the yarn to make as much fluff as you desire.

Cut 6 strands for each braid. Secure one end of the braid with a small clear rubber band and braid the yarn in 3 sections of 2 strands per section. Repeat so you have 2 braids. Glue the braids to the top of the head at the base of the gathered sock.

Cut the men’s thermal boot sock in half. Pull the bottom part of the sock with the toe portion up over the rice-filled sock. Keep part of the thermal sock just under the nose and pull up the rest as much as you can. Hot glue the sock in place around the head. Cut the black or red cuff off of the remaining sock half and stretch it around the top of the head, leaving just the top of the white sock showing. Hot glue the sock in place.

Put the black adult super-soft sock over the cone and pull down all the way or allow the sock to hang over the top to create the hat.

Hot glue the sock covered foam cone to the top of the gnome head by putting the glue on the gnome head. Be generous with the amount of glue. Hold the form down firmly until it sets.

Hot glue into place. Silver beads make a great embellishment to the hat. Simply cut the strand as long as you need it to go around the base of the hat twice and then up around the top of the hat above the buffalo check ribbon. Tuck and hot glue white floral sprigs into the ribbon and at the end of the black sock.

Make the gnomes nose a pink color by wiping some bright pink lipstick onto the nose fabric. Putting the lipstick on your fingers first to then wipe on the nose is a helpful tip.
