Things Every Student Needs For Their College Apartment
Thanks to Better Homes and Gardens® and Wamsutta® for helping us get college-apartment ready. As always, opinions are 100% my own.
Moving into your first college apartment is a big step. Do you have all of these essentials to make your apartment the perfect home away from home?
Back to school season is in full gear and for many of us, that means checking items off the school supply list for the littles. In our case, however, it means we will be driving Gabrielle back to Boston to start her senior year of college. Senior year. As in eight months, she will be a college graduate, ready to blaze her own path in this world. She is more than ready, but as a parent, it’s just as bittersweet to send her off now as it was her freshman year. This year, Gabrielle will be moving into her first college apartment on campus. Naturally, as her mom, I want to make sure that her home away from home is cozy, comfortable and stocked with the necessities she needs.
While I love the idea of a trendy apartment that is dressed to the nines, furnishing a college apartment can get expensive. So Gabby and I like to look for some budget-friendly home furnishing ideas. Apartment living is another step towards independence since you have to cook and clean for yourself.
Here are some suggestions for some Things Every Student Needs for Their College Apartment.
Sheets & Bedding
Pretty basic, huh? But sheets are a necessity. Better Homes & Gardens® 300 Thread Count sheet set is a great set without breaking the budget. Available in a multitude of colors at Walmart, they are made from 100% cotton sateen. I love the fact that they are soft and easy care too, which is great for students.
Towels
Another basic but important item is towels. Wamsutta® Hygro® Duet towels from Bed Bath & Beyond are extra absorbent, incredibly soft and made with HygroCotton®. This means they get softer and fluffier wash after wash. Again, it’s all about value and these towels are a great value for the price.
Extra Lighting
A nice lamp or two is a perfect way to add ambiance to your college apartment. You can find a lot of budget-friendly options at consignment or thrift shops.
Pots and Pans
What’s an apartment without something to cook with? Whether you keep to the basics or are a gourmet, invest in a basic set of pots and pans to spice things up in your kitchen.
Dishes, Glasses & Utensils
What’s a home cooked meal in your new apartment without anything to eat it with or on? You need some basic cooking utensils (spatula, slotted spoons, sharp knives) to make the meal and a set of silverware to eat with. To save money, ask family or friends if they have anything they no longer use. I cleaned out my utensil drawer for Gabrielle and gave her an old set of dishes. Now she is well-stocked and ready to cook.
A Basic Cookbook
Whether your child knows how to cook or not, a basic cookbook can come in handy. They can experiment with new foods, especially if the cooking arsenal is very limited. This way, they won’t get tired of eating the same things.
Small Appliances
I suggest keeping the appliances to a minimum but a coffee maker (if they like coffee) and a toaster or toaster oven come in handy. A Bluetooth device or radio is also nice to stream some cool tunes.
Cleaning Supplies
This may be everyone’s least favorite job, but it has to be done. Basic cleaning solutions, as well as mops, rags and a bucket, should be on your college apartment shopping list.
Area Rugs
It’s amazing how comfortable and cozy a rug will make a room feel. Add area rugs to bring warmth to your space.
Surge Protectors & Extension Cords
Protect those electronics with a good surge protector. Always keep a few extension cords on hand too. As difficult as it is to send you child off to college, knowing they have all the necessities needed to move into their first college apartment gives us parents peace of mind.
