The real fun begins when it’s time to decorate. Rich chocolate frosting becomes the “dirt” of our mini graveyards, topped with a sprinkle of crushed Oreos for that freshly dug look. But the star of the show? Those adorable tombstone cupcakes made from Milano cookies! A little black icing transforms them into RIP markers that’ll have everyone dying to take a bite.

What really brings these graveyard cupcakes to life (or should we say, death?) are the spooky finishing touches. Gummy worms peeking out of the “soil” add a creepy-crawly element, while ghost Peeps stand guard. It’s these little details that make these cupcakes perfect for Halloween parties or fall bake sales. They’re cute enough for kids but tasty enough to impress the grown-ups too!

Halloween Graveyard Cupcakes Tips & Tricks

  • Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting to avoid melting the “dirt”.
  • For easier piping, chill the frosting for about 15 minutes before using.
  • Crush the Oreos in a sealed bag to avoid mess – a rolling pin works great for this.
  • Write on the Milano cookies before placing them in the cupcakes to avoid wobbling.
  • No piping bag? Use a ziplock bag with a corner snipped off as a makeshift piping tool.
  • Make ahead tip: Bake cupcakes a day in advance and store them in an airtight container. If you have leftover cupcakes, store them in the fridge and let them come to room temperature before serving again.
  • Get creative with tombstone messages – funny puns work great!
  • Add candy pumpkins or plastic spider rings for extra Halloween flair.

Ingredients

  • 1 box Devils Food cupcake mix, plus water, oil, and eggs from the box directions
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp. milk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 16 Oreo cookies
  • 12 Milano cookies
  • Black writing icing
  • Mini gummy worms
  • Ghost peeps

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cupcakes, according to the box directions, and allow them to cool completely.
  2. For the frosting, in a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, until smooth. Add the vanilla and mix.
  3. Add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, a little at a time, mixing to combine, adding the milk a little at a time to thin out the frosting, as needed.
  4. Once the frosting is well combined, add to a piping bag with a 1M star tip.
  5. Pipe a layer of frosting onto each cupcake.
  6. For the Oreo crumbs, separate the Oreos and remove the creme filling. Add the cookie halves to a gallon storage bag.
  7. Crush the cookies into crumbs, and sprinkle over top of the frosted cupcakes.
  8. For the graveyard head stones, take the 12 Milano cookies, and use the black writing icing to write RIP, or other headstone sayings, onto the cookies.
  9. Press these into the cupcakes.
  10. Decorate the cupcakes with mini gummy worms, and peeps ghosts. You may need to use toothpicks inserted into the peeps to help support them on the cakes.
