Desperate times call for desperate measures. Well, not to get all gloom and doom on you but I ran out of sandwich bread the other day. And in our current state of “quarantine at home”, “Shelter at home”, “Stay Home” and “social distancing”, I did not want to venture out with my mask on to grab a loaf at the grocery store. So, I didn’t panic. I took a deep breath and whipped up some Homemade Country White Bread.

Knead by hand for several minutes to remove air bubbles.

Step 3

Bake on center rack of a 350-degree oven for approx. 30 minutes. You can check doneness by lightly tapping on the top of loaf. It will sound hollow when it is done. Cool in pan for about 5 minutes, then remove from pan to wire rack and cool completely before slicing.

A Few Bread Baking Tips:

  • You may substitute buttermilk for the regular milk.
  • Ginger can be omitted but it does help the dough to rise.
  • Substituting potato water (water which you have boiled potatoes for mashed potatoes) for the tap water will also help the dough rise.
  • If you like a soft crust, brush melted butter on bread tops after removing from oven, then cover with a clean dish towel until cooled.
