We’ve reached the halfway point of summer and my flower gardens are in dire need of sprucing up! Summer is always a crazy time of year for us and our farm. Farm life, busy schedules and life has gotten in the way of my garden therapy. So much for the lazy days of summer. My gardening duties always seem to get shuffled to the bottom of my to do list. I finally found some quiet time to show my gardens some love, so I took charge and got my gardens looking bright and beautiful again.
Here are five quick ways Ways to Spruce Up Your Midsummer Garden and make them look new again.
Weeds Be Gone!:
Weeds love to thrive in the heat and humidity (at least they do in New Jersey). As you probably know, they are very aggressive annoyances and can take over fast and furiously. Give your garden a good weeding – the down on your hands and knees type of weeding. Put on your gloves, grab your kneeler and small garden cultivator and go to town. Work the soil, get rid of those weeds but be sure to not get too carried away and pull the flowers out too : )
Remove any dead plants.
Remove any flowers or plants that did not survive their planting and clean up the area.
Deadhead any flowers or perennials.
This helps to promote new growth. When deadheading your plants, be sure to cut just below the dead flower so you don’t accidentally cut any buds or new growth.
Hoe! Hoe! Hoe!
No, Santa is not here yet. With a hoe or cultivator, work the ground around your plants. Break up the soil and “fluff” up the mulch. This not only makes your garden look fresh but also helps promote better drainage for watering and fertilizing.
Fertilize after you cultivated everything.
It’s always good to fertilize after your cultivate because the soil is loose and is able to better absorb the fertilizer. Continue to fertilize every two weeks until fall arrives.
How often do you spend time in your flower garden? I just love sitting outside and enjoying the beautiful colors they create. Gardening is a great family activity too. Get the kids involved and spend some quality outdoor time together. I hope you are enjoying your summer.
