I consider myself a “sideaholic”. I love side dishes, especially at Thanksgiving. Yep, Thanksgiving is all about the sides and I always make sure I leave room on my plate for each and every one adorning my Thanksgiving table.
Today, I am sharing a delicious dressed up sweet potato recipe. These Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes are creamy and delicious. It’s a nice change on the normal candied sweet potatoes. And no, I am throwing shade at candied sweet potatoes, I just like to mix things up a little.

Sweet potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse! They are high in fiber, rich in antioxidants, contain a ton of B6 which is great for your heart and are rich in beta-carotene. They by far outweigh the white potato when it comes to the health benefits.
Ingredients Needed To Make Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes (I prefer orange because they are moister inside)
Whole Milk (can also substiture cashew milk, oat milk, or milk of your choosing)
Salt to taste
Fresh thyme or rosemary
For a sweet version, add a little brown sugar or maple syrup, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and some chopped pecans or walnuts instead of the garlic powder and herbs.
How To Make Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Grab a peeler and start peeling. This is my least favorite task of this recipe, but creamy mashed sweet potatoes need to be peeled.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. and carefully add sweet potatoes. Bring water back to a boil. Reduce heat. Cook uncovered for about 15 -20 minutes until potatoes are fork-tender.
Drain sweet potatoes in a colander. Place sweet potatoes in a large bowl. Add butter, milk, garlic powder, herbs and salt. Use a potato masher or hand mixer to mash potatoes until smooth. Serve warm with extra butter.
