There are a few kitchen essentials you will need to make a milkshake at home, no matter what your flavor preference.
- A blender, milkshake maker or hand-held blender
- Frozen ice cream, yogurt, or non-dairy ice cream
- Milk or a non-dairy milk
- If you want a fruit milkshake, then don’t forget fresh fruit. Hit up the local farmers market!
- Milkshake flavor (ie vanilla extract or drink syrups)
- Milkshake toppings (jimmies, I am looking right at you)

How To Make A Milkshake Without A Blender
Ok, so you don’t have a blender on hand. Can you make a milkshake without a blender? Of course you can. Here are some suggestions on how to make a milkshake without a blender.
- Option 1: Grab a quart size mason jar with a lid or a microwave-safe food storage container with a lid. Scoop the ice cream into the jar. Place in microwave and cook for 5 seconds until ice cream starts to melt. Remove and add milk and any flavorings. Place lid on the mason jar and shake vigorously. It’s a great way to get in your daily workout, but it works! If you don’t have a mason jar, use the food storage container instead.
- Option 2: Let your ice cream sit out at room temperature for 15-20 minutes. Grab a glass bowl (or batter bowl) and a whisk. Scoop softened ice cream into the bowl and add the milk and flavoring. Slowly start to whisk together until incorporated. Enjoy!
