As summer gives way to autumn and cooler temperatures, rest assured it doesn’t mean it’s the end of outdoor activities. It just changes. One fun aspect of fall is apple harvest time. Fall is a busy time here on our family farm.

But it is so much fun to see our customers creating a lot of fall family memories by heading out to “pick your own” apples in our orchards. Nothing says fall like traveling to an apple orchard, walking among the trees to find the perfect bag or two of apples to take home.

Toss in some fun and games, and maybe a little apple cider, and you have the makings of a fun fall season. New Jersey is home to several impressive apple orchards. Head out with the family to one of these New Jersey apple-picking farms and create some fun family memories.

Most of these farms offer wagon rides to their orchards, as well as pumpkin picking, apple cider doughnuts, farm animals and a whole lot of family fun!

The Best Farms To Pick Your Own Apples In NJ

Russo’s Fruit & Vegetable Farm – Tabernacle, NJ

Here are Russo’s, we grow 20 acres of our own apples here on our 900-acre farm in South Jersey. We currently have 16 varieties of apples. This means there is a nice selection for those who have a particular apple taste.

Some like them tart, some like them sweet and some like them in between. As far as pick your own apples, we currently offer u-pick for our Red Delicious and Stayman Winesap varieties. Our Pick Your Own Annex is located at 299 Flyatt Road in Tabernacle, NJ. U-Pick apples (and pick your own pumpkins) is open every Friday through Sunday starting Friday, September 16, 2022. Our hours are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The last wagon ride to the field leaves at 4:30 p.m.

Enjoy a wagon ride out to our apple orchards. You can also visit our pumpkin patch and find your way out of a family-friendly corn maze too. Be sure to give us a call at 609-268-0239 if the weather is questionable. Make it a fun family event.

When you are finished picking, be sure to stop by our farm market across the street. Here, you can shop our full line of fresh produce that we grow and enjoy hot apple cider donuts and homemade ice cream.

Additional varieties of apples that we grow are also available in our store, including Stayman Winesap, Fuji, Pink Lady, Cameo, Ginger Gold, Rome, Cortland and Golden Delicious.

Hill Creek Farms – Mullica Hill

The western New Jersey apple orchard, about 30 minutes east of Wilmington, Delaware, is more than just buying apples. Hill Creek Farms is u-pick ‘em apple orchard. They open three orchards to the public, with thousands of apples available for harvest.

Plan to spend a bulk of your day at the orchard, with children having a few attractions to keep them busy and help burn off energy. From a barrel train ride to duck races, Hill Creek Farms has a lot to offer families, friends and couples looking for a fun day in the country. Don’t forget to enjoy an apple donut and a cup of freshly-made apple cider.

Battleview Orchards – Freehold

About a 45-minute drive from Trenton, Battleview Orchards in Freehold showcases nearly 15 varieties of apples. With harvest dates ranging from late August through the end of October, the apple orchard welcomes visitors beginning Aug. 31.

While the orchard is strictly a working farm without games for children, it does offer hayrides on the weekends beginning the last weekend of September. While you’re at the orchard, visit the country store (opened year-round) for treats such as apple pies and cookies, as well as fresh apple cider. You can also have gift baskets created for the holidays.

Terhune Orchards – Princeton

Using sustainable farm practices, Terhune Orchards in Princeton raises more than 40 crops on about 200 acres. Apple picking weekends kick off in mid-September and run through the last weekend of October. A family activity, you’ll have a variety of apples from which to choose as you load up your bags.

While at the farm, visit the barnyard animals, such as sheep, goats, horses, ducks and chickens. Children are encouraged to play on the pedal vehicles, such as a John Deere tractor replica.  The orchard also offers a reading program that you can register children for at an additional fee. Don’t forget to pick up some treats at the farm store before you head home.

Eastmont Orchards- Colts Neck

Apple picking season at Eastmont Orchards kicks off in early September with Honeycrisp and McIntosh varieties ready to go home with you. The Colts Neck orchard will have more than 15 types of apples ready for harvest through the end of October.

Open daily, the farm, about 30 minutes from New Brunswick, offers you pick ‘em harvesting. The orchard has been in the Barclay family since 1923. As it approaches its centennial in a few seasons, the farm has grown from the first apple trees that were planted in 1922 by a previous owner.

Demarest Farms – Hillsdale

Beginning in early September and running through early November, Demarest Farms in Hillsdale offers you pick ‘em, harvesting more than 14 varieties of apples. The orchard invites visitors’ children to meet the animals at its petting zoo.

With alpacas, sheep, goats, pigs and deer among the animals, children are free to roam among the animals to pet them. During your visit, check out the treats at the farm store, including fresh pies, apple donuts and Jane’s ice cream. Following apple season, the farm hosts a haunted attraction among the apple trees. Then, to close out the year, Demarest Farms hosts a holiday lights display.

Since most of us like apples, having an opportunity to pick them fresh off the tree seems like a fun and healthy thing to do.
