How to Make Caramel Apple Slices: Ingredients Needed

Before preparing these sweet apple slices dipped in caramel, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Apples – Grab two granny smith apples for this recipe.
  • Soft Caramels – You’ll melt the caramels down before dipping your apples into the caramel sauce.
  • Chocolate Chips – Use around one cup of chocolate chips for this recipe.
  • Paramount Crystals – If you don’t have these crystals, you can use coconut oil.
  • Mini M&Ms – Measure out a cup of the mini M&Ms for these apple slices.

You’ll also need popsicle sticks when assembling these slices.

Recipe Notes

  • It’s best to make these the day of eating them or the day before. You don’t want to make them too soon in advance because they might get hard and won’t taste as good.
  • The best way to keep your apple slices from browning is to grab some lemon juice and drizzle it on top. You can also use a food brush to add lemon juice on top of the apple slices on both sides to keep them from browning.
  • You’ll need to remove excess moisture from the apple slices to get the caramel to stick. The caramel won’t stick if the apples are too wet! An easy way to remove the excess water is to place the apple slices between two clean paper towels and press down firmly to remove the excess water.

What Are The Best Apples For Caramel Apples? Which Apple Should I Use?

Not a fan of granny smiths? No problem, you can use your favorite apple variety instead. Here are some apple varieties that you can use with this recipe. I like a sweeter apple but keep in mind that the caramel coating is sweet too so you may prefer a slightly tarter apple to balance the sweetness.

  • Stayman Winesap (tart)
  • Granny Smith Apples (tart)
  • Gala (sweet)
  • Honeycrisp (slightly tart)
  • Cameo (sweet)
  • Jonaprince (slightly tart)
  • Fuji (sweet)
  • Red Delicious (sweet)
  • Yellow Delicious (sweet)

What kind of chocolate chips do I need to use?

You can use any brand and flavor of chocolate chips, such as milk, semi-sweet, or even white chocolate.

Can I use regular M&M candies instead of the mini ones?

While you can use the large M&Ms, the mini ones work best, and you can get more of them on top of the apple slices.

  • Mini M&Ms 1 cup
  • Popsicle sticks

Instructions

    2. Slice granny smith apples into about 1/2 inch wide slices. You should be able to get between 3-5 slices depending on how large your apple is.
    3. Use a paper towel to pat down each side of the apple slices to remove moisture.
    4. Use a sharp knife to cut a slit into the apple base and slide the popsicle stick into it.
    5. Remove any exposed seeds and lay down apples onto the baking sheet.
    6. Melt the soft caramels in a microwave safe bowl for 30 second increments, stirring between, until melted.
    7. Use a spoon to spread the caramel on the apples, allow the caramel to sit for a minute to set a bit.
    8. Melt the chocolate chips as you did the caramel.
    9. Slowly add paramount crystals (or coconut oil) as needed to thin out the chocolate a bit so that it is easier to use.
    10. Spread or drizzle the chocolate on top of the caramel.
    11. While the chocolate is still hot, drop the M&Ms onto the top of the chocolate.
    12. Place the pan in the fridge to help the chocolate and caramel set.

Notes

NOTES:
Candied apples are best made just prior to serving or the day of.
If you want to avoid browning, brush a small amount of lemon juice on the exposed apple surface after the apple is assembled.
Be sure to remove the excess moisture or the caramel/chocolate will not stick on the apples.
