Apple crisp is a tasty, crisp, and crumbly dessert containing fresh apple slices paired with the perfect blend of spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg. It’s much like an apple pie but even easier to prepare. And with this recipe for making it in a cast iron skillet, you simply can’t go wrong!
Cast Iron Apple Crisp Ingredients
- Granny Smith Apples – Grab two apples and slice them into thin pieces.
- White Sugar – Use the white sugar to add a slight sweetness to your apples.
- Cinnamon – The addition of cinnamon goes great with these apples and truly makes this apple crisp even better.
- Nutmeg – Don’t forget to include a ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg for added flavor.
- All Purpose Flour – Combine your apples and spices with two tablespoons of flour.
- Oats – The oats are a must-have for that crumble topping.
- Butter – You will need unsalted butter. Be sure to leave it out and let it soften up before using it to make the crumble topping.
You’re also going to need a few other ingredients, such as brown sugar and salt, to complete this recipe.

- When adding your crumble topping over the apples, be sure to cover around 80% of the apples.
- While preparing your ingredients on the stove, set your oven to 350 degrees to get it hot and ready for baking.
- When baking in the oven, check at the 25-minute mark. It should be golden brown and bubbly. If not, leave it in for an additional five minutes or so, checking regularly.

Ingredients
- Apple Filling
- 2 granny smith apples, sliced thin
- ¼ cup white sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoon all purpose flour
- Crumble Topping
- ¼ cup flour
- ⅓ cup oats
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons softened butter, unsalted
- 6" Cast Iron Skillet

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a bowl with the sliced apples, add the sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and flour. Use a spoon to toss together until the apples are completely coated. Set aside and let the apple juices and dry ingredients caramelize.
- In a saucepan over medium heat add the butter. Stir until melted.
- Then add the flour, oats, salt and brown sugar. Mix until thoroughly combined. Stir this mixture every few minutes until slightly melted together and the oats have become browned.
- Add the apple mixture to the cast iron pan. Make sure to scrape all the good juices and sugars into the pan.
- Scoop the oat crumble on top of the apples, covering the apples 80%.
- Bake in the oven for 25 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
